Pranab Da, not Rahul, saved the situation: Advani

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS): It was President Pranab Mukherjee and not Rahul Gandhi who saved the situation arising from the controversial ordinance, and the Congress vice president was only used for damage control by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, veteran BJP leader L.K.Advani said Friday.

In his blog titled "It's Pranab Da, not Rahul, who saved the situation," Advani has written: "With the Cabinet deciding on Wednesday to withdraw the ordinance as well as the bill pending before Parliament in respect of convicted MPs and MLAs, yet another ugly chapter in the unflattering history of the UPA government has ended."

"That most of the media reports on this development have described it as a victory for Rahul Gandhi, is a comment on how superficial the media generally has become these days."

Advani writes: "Soniaji may have thought of doing some damage control using Rahul for the purpose. It is obvious, however, that no one advised him how precisely he was to carry out this task. The objective would have been fully served if Rahul had simply said that the decision taken by the government needs to be reviewed."

Advani mentions in his blog that since the Congress ministers were called by the president, it seems they were told that he had reservation about signing the ordinance. The president returning the ordinance unsigned would have been a major setback for the government, so Rahul Gandhi was used for this purpose.

Advani writes: "Rahul's victory is really confined to rubbing off UPA's authority, and not merely the Prime Minister's. From day one, UPA has always meant Dr. Manmohan Singh and Smt. Sonia Gandhi. So, the 'nonsense' slur hurled at the Cabinet approved ordinance cannot apply only to the P.M. and his Ministers. Soniaji must also share responsibility."

The senior BJP leader has also questioned the prime minister and written, "What was there in the outburst on the ordinance which the PM could possibly discuss with his Cabinet?"

When he was asked about Rahul Gandhi's outburst over the ordinance, Manmohan Singh told media persons he would meet the Congress vice president and discuss the issue with his cabinet.

Most of us have a tendency in believing here say and do not bother to check the facts. When Sonia Gandhi refused to become PM the BJP spread the lie that President Abdul Kalam did not agree. The world came to know from the Man himself that that was not the case. Now the same BJP tries to spread another lie. Pranab Mukherjee may say that that was not the case.LK Advani has been completely finished in BJP. What he is trying to do is revive himself by sensationalising the issue. BJP is a spin doctors and liers party. Most of their leaders have double speak. Look at the toilet verses temple issue.

    Sri Mohan H Naik,

I respect ur thoughts & feelings.
whatever u said reagrding ordinance passing or returning for ''reconsidering the same'' is perfect.

    The question lies here is
    1) why Mr.RG had not spoken before itself, when the talk of bringing such an ordinance,it should have been stopped.
2)all party meeting happened, cabinet cleared the ordinance..he was knowing everything..but kept quite.

3)When news of President's reservation came..then,he talked against it..not only that he and the people around him made PM a ''scapegoat'' and also brought the impression that Indian Govt. is not capable to take proper decision.

    Hindustani,
I disagree. In fact, as I commented earlier, I stand by my comments, that RG is marching in right direction.
    Lets analyse the situation.
Are our law maker really think about President before they pass the bill -NO.
Is our President has constitutional Power to stop the Ordinanace-NO
He can only return back (Once only !)with a slip"Re-consider"
Its RG's Outburst that brought this change. So credit goes to RG.
Coming to "Gandhi Brand" I agree. But when RG or any common man of India start walking in the path of MKG, we should have no objection, for carrying Gandhi Surname, because he becomes Gandhian.
    This is my thought.

Senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani wrote in his blog that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had used Rahul to save the party from embarrassment over the ordinance on lawmakers after knowing President Pranab Mukherjee's mind.

Mr. Advani, are you complaining or are you complementing Sonia Gandhi? She has indeed saved the Congress Party embarrassment.

Moreover, please tell us as to why your party supported the ordinance in the all party meeting and then backed out?

    Exactly Mr. Almeida.

If LKA, Susuma, Jaitly or others were actively participating in the parliament, there was no need to run to the President with a memorandum nor for RG to come openly to the media with whatever he did.

The PM said the ordinance came for discussion not once but TWICE. Let the opposition prove the PM's comment wrong or admit that they were as fearful as any other politician if there wasn't protection to them through such an ordinance !
