Agency report
Mohali, Mar 11: After being at the receiving end of national selectors' whims, Sourav Ganguly now has a chance to set the system right.
The former skipper was on Friday named in a list of six past and present cricketers who would give their views on a number of issues including overhauling the present system of selection.
The other cricketers in the list are Dilip Vengsarkar, K Srikkanth, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, a press release from the BCCI said.
These "special invitees" would "examine the present system of selection of national and state teams and of umpires and suggest ways to make them more efficient and foolproof," the release said.
The BCCI also announced that it had set up an 11-member Special Committee under the chairmanship of Punjab Cricket Association Chief IS Bindra, to work out ways for optimum utilization of resources.
The committee has been asked to finalise its report in four weeks' time.
Other areas where the committee would look into included "suggesting efficient way of utilisation of resources and developing world-class infrastructure from grass roots to international level."
I’m not campaigning for anybody: Ganguly
Kolkata: Former cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly on Friday night scotched speculation that he would campaign for the CPM in the coming West Bengal Assembly polls, saying his sole aim now was to concentrate on his game and make a comeback to the Indian squad.
"All I want to make absolutely clear is that I am not campaigning for anybody presently," Ganguly said at a hurriedly convened media conference at his residence.
The cricketer said that he had outstanding personal relations with several CPM leaders like Sitaram Yechury, Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Urban Development Minister Ashoke Bhattacharya.
"I respect all of them. I know them personally. But now, I am trying to make a comeback into the national team by playing domestic cricket. I am sure, all these leaders also want me to play well and return to the Indian team," Ganguly said, hours after reports in a section of the media that he would campaign for the states ruling Left Front major CPM.
