Foreign soldier killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, Oct 15 (IANS): A soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in an attack in southern Afghanistan Tuesday.

"An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an attack by enemy forces in southern Afghanistan today," Xinhua reported citing an ISAF statement.

The statement gave neither the nationality of the victim nor the details about the incident under the ISAF policy.

Currently more than 87,000 NATO-led coalition troops, including nearly 60,000 Americans, are deployed in the country to stop Taliban militants from returning to power.

The casualty in Tuesday's attack brought the number of foreign soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 141 this year.

In an unrelated incident, eight Afghan civilians, including four children, were wounded when a remote-controlled bomb went off in a market in Pashton Zarghon district of the country's western province of Herat earlier Tuesday, deputy provincial police chief Abdul Hamid Hamidi told Xinhua.

He blamed Taliban insurgents for the attack.
