MP temple stampede: 21 officials, cops suspended

Bhopal, Oct 15 (PTI): A total of 21 officials and policemen including Datia district Collector and Superintendent of Police were suspended by Madhya Pradesh government in the wake of stampede at Ratangarh temple, in which 115 people were killed and scores injured.

Besides Collector Sanket Bhondwa and SP CS Solanki, the state government also suspended Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) B N Basave, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Mahip Tejasvi, three sub-inspectors, three head constables and 11 constables, official sources said.

Those suspended include policemen posted at Atreta and Indergarh police stations of Datia and not Sevdha police station as reported earlier, sources said.

The officials and police personnel were suspended after the state government took nod of the Election Commission, as the state is bound by Model Code of Conduct after announcement of Assembly polls scheduled for next month, they said.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took the decision after reviewing the situation at Datia along with Chief Secretary Antony J C DeSa, Director General of Police (DGP) Nandan Dube and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Intelligence, Sarabjeet Singh.

Raghuraj M R has been posted as the new Collector of Datia and R K Marathe as the SP.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the tragedy remained at 115 today with no fresh casualties reported, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Chambal Range, DK Arya told PTI.

The stampede, which also left over 100 injured, was triggered by rumours on October 13 that a river bridge on Sindh river leading to the temple that the devotees were crossing was about to collapse.

Dear Nagesh do you know what happened there?,just to make way for a BJP leader to enter the temple, police began lathi-charge and that is why the stampede happened.Your BJP just do not want the opposition to raise the issue and hide the afcts doesn’t mean that Congress should keep quiet.
Further note that at same site in 2006 when over 56 pilgrims were washed away after water was released in the Sindh river from upstream and the judicial enquiry report is not ready till date.Do you have anything to say now?

Suspension with pay will not serve any meaningful purpose....

Arrest them and charge them for the death of so many people...

Most of IAS and IPS officers in India are unfit to become even handle Peons jobs...mug and pass USPS exam( Some time bribe and bring political influence to pass too!!!) and then think they are capable of handling any issue in the world...

One SI and 9 Constables to tackle a Crowd of 2-3 lakh people which resulted in heavy death toll few years ago???

This SP should not hold any public post rest of his life,,, if he was busy with making arrangements for CMs function then Shame on him and his CM....

    Mismanagement from Madhya Pradesh Government.

The law enforcement bear the brunt.

NOW NO NEED SHIVARAJ SINGH CHOUHAN TO RESIGN, WITHIN TWO MONTHS THEY WILL BE OUT FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

Suspension is feasible if the suspended officials and cops derelict their duty in handling the crowd.Let this not become a face saving excercise from the state in view of bad record reflecting forthcoming assembly election.Thanq.

Vincent,Thank you for your un biased comment. Suspending is not the solution, they should be booked for robbery & murder charges to be tried by the fast track court. They have created panic among the crowd, lathi charged then looted the valuables. It is well planned.
WE had a bad experience during our Visit to Vaisnavadevi temple from Bombay,Police personals looted passengers at gun point for the reasons having Nepali currency(one small denomination)and the other person having his girl friend photo in his valet etc. when we protested they insisted to get down from the train to police station.
