Beltangady, Oct 16: In a theft which took place on Monday October 14 night in Chandkur temple, located at Laila, thieves looted an Utsav idol.

The thieves broke the main door to the sanctorum of Chandkur Shree Durgaparameshwari Temple and took away the ancient Utsava idol. The idol was 8 inch in height and weighed 1.25 kgs.

It is learnt that on October 14 in the noon, Temple priest Ganesh Ithal locked the door after Puja and the incident of theft came light on Tuesday October 15. Police investigated the incident and have registered a case.

On account of Navaratri, a special Puja and celebrations were held in the Temple.

It is suspected that the thieves barged into the Temple to loot gold and other valuables. But as Temple management kept the valuables in a safe place, thieves were only able to take away the idol.

Few months ago, theft at Temples were on rise which seemed controlled for a while but after this incident, it looks like theft operation has resumed.
