Legal immunity of six far-right Greek MPs lifted

Athens, Oct 16 (IANS): The Greek parliament voted Wednesday in favour of revoking the legal immunity of six far-right Golden Dawn (Chryssi Avgi) party deputies, as the crackdown against the party for criminal activities continues.

With 247 deputies present in the 300-member strong assembly during the vote, the request of prosecuting magistrates for the lifting immunity of four Golden Dawn deputies was accepted -- 246 voted for the resolution against four MPs and 247 voted against the other two.

The vote opens the way so that the legislators can be brought before court to be tried on various charges - including involvement in a criminal gang.

Five of the total 18 Golden Dawn party deputies, including party chief Nikos Michaloliakos, were arrested late September on charges of forming a criminal organisation in the wake of the killing of an anti-fascist activist by a party member Sep 18.

A date for trial has not yet been set as investigations continue against the party deputies for involvement in beatings of migrants and leftists, extortion and money laundering. Greek authorities are also looking into the party's financing.
