Udupi, Oct 19: "A farmer’s meeting will be held by the government to discuss further course of action regarding Brahmavar sugar factory. Efforts are on to retain the location of the factory," said minister Vinay Kumar Sorake.
He was speaking after inaugurating an agricultural fair held at regional agricultural and horticultural research center in Brahmavar here on Saturday October 18.
The programme is being held under the aegis of regional agricultural research center, Brahmavara and Ullal; agricultural science centre, Brahmavara and Mangalore, Cashew and Cocoa development directorate, Cochin; Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, Udupi, National Agricultural and Rural Development Bank, Mangalore; irrigation development, horticulture, silk, forest, animal husbandry and fisheries department, Udupi; district farmer’s society, Udupi and Mangalore under Atma Project.
“The process of releasing Rs 12 crore due to farmers and employees of Brahmavar sugar factory is in progress. The factory land will be retained and improved," he added.
"An agricultural or horticultural university will be started in Brahmavar. Varahi project will be revived to make it benefit the farmers. Rs 450 crore will be needed to complete the project,” he said.
“The excess rain water flowing in 13 rivers in the rainy season goes to the sea. If it is diverted towards western ghats, there will be no scarcity of water there. Conferences such as these, help to increase the confidence of farmers. If floods cause more than 50% of destruction, a compensation at the rate of Rs 25,000 per hectare will be paid against them,” he said.
“Outsiders should not fix the prices for farm produce. Farmers should be paid fair prices for their produce. A project in this regard will be prepared after discussing with the famers,” said Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, who presided over the programme.
An attractive exhibition of agricultural produce and a discussion were held on the occasion. Dr P M Salimut, special officer, Shimoga agriculture and horticulture department inaugurated the exhibition. K M Udupa, Bharath Vikas Trust managing trustee delivered the keynote address.
Udupi zilla panchayat president Upendra Nayak distributed seeds to the farmers.
