Congress MP Rashid Masood disqualified from Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Oct 21 (PTI): Congress MP Rashid Masood was on Monday disqualified from the Rajya Sabha after he was convicted in a corruption case recently.

Masood was sentenced to four years in jail by a Delhi court in a corruption case.

He has become the first Member of Parliament to lose his seat after a July 10 Supreme Court judgment had removed the immunity for convicted lawmakers.

Masood, 67, was immediately taken into custody by the court.

The Special CBI court had held Masood guilty of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool as Health Minister in the National Front government of 1990.

Masood's conviction and sentencing was the first case after the Supreme Court judgment that struck down a provision in the Representation of the People Act that allowed incumbent MPs and MLAs to avoid disqualification by filing an appeal in a higher court.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav is also facing disqualification as MP from the Lok Sabha after a Ranchi court convicted him in the 1996 fodder scam case.

It is a refreshing news that the cleansing of political class has just begun. We should be thankful to the SC for bringing this law/judgement. We are fed up of criminals in politics irrespective of their affiliation. We hope more and more MP/Legislators with criminal background are disqualified and debarred from contesting elections. People with clean image should be encouraged to come into politics. Today politics has become a business. Elected reps are supposed to serve the people and not other way around.

Very good. All tainted MLAs\Ministers\CMs and others should not be allowed to continue to serve the nation. They lost their right to serve the Nation with their greedy\criminal ways and should be debarred from ever coming back into politics.

Dear Dev, have some patience. Congiss having countless Leaders facing corruption charges where as in BJP and other Parties having only counted Leaders tried to follow the footsteps of CONgiss but everything went wrong and they are already in the jail facing CBI probe. If you push them all in one shot, maybe we need few more new air conditioned Central Jails on urgent basis which may again end up in another scandal too. Now Supreme Court started with 5, 10, 20, 40 crores corruption cases. When it comes to 176,000 or 183,000 Lakhs Crores of Rupees corruptions cases, maybe we all celebrate Golden Jubilee in same Daiji Forum. Even now Swizz Bank too, bound to disclose the funds maintained by any Individual, Firm or Company. You might have heard about the Private Jail being constructed in south side to accommodate those who can afford to have all modern facilities, so it’s not meant for any petty thieves

Congress free India, Corruption free India.

The whole Congress party under the sole command of Mrs Gandhi is guilty of looting Mother India and so it would be most appropriate to disqualify the congress party.

Unless Narendra Modi comes in power at centre the culprits in all the scams (Adarsh, CWG, Bofors, Chopper, 2G, Coalgate, Railgate...) under UPA / Congress rule wouldn't be punished!
