Construction Academy to come up in state: Labour minister

Mangalore, Oct 25: “With an aim to empower workers, the government has planned to bring 98 lac BPL families under the scheme of Rastriya Swasthiya Bhima Yojana (RSBY). In the first phase, chief minister has approved to bring 43 BPL families under this scheme,” said P T Parameshwara Naik, state minister for labour, addressing the press meet held at DC office here on Thursday October 24.

"There are rehabilitation centers for the victims of child labour in Mangalore, Udupi, Hassan, Chikmagalur. In Mangalore, the number of child labour victims is fewer. Government is seriously trying to abolish the child labour system," he said.

“Giving importance to building construction workers, government has organized mass registration campaign. 3 lac members have already registered. There is an aim to register 20 lac construction labourers in the state. Government has taken steps to establish six residential schools in the state for the children of construction workers. The schools will provide good education similar to the national schools. Two schools will be started in Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Bellary, and Gulbarga,” he said.

Government will also recommend 11 city corporations to provide free residential apartments to the construction labourers. State government has also planned to start Construction Academy worth Rs 200 crore in the vast 20 acre Dodaballpur land.

Scholarships worth Rs 10,000 for school children, Rs 15,000 for PUC children, and for the children of construction workers who are perceiving their engineering, medical, post graduation per month will be given Rs 2,000 as financial assistance for their studies.

“Government has plans to start 100 ITI colleges in the state especially in the rural areas to evade unemployment. The German-Karnataka Multi Skill Development Project at cost of Rs 42 crore will be soon implemented in the district,” he added.
