Army sent to plug Bengal embankment breach

Kolkata, Oct 27 (IANS): Army personnel were rushed to West Bengal's East Midnapore district Sunday to plug a breach in the embankment of river Kangsabati, an official statement said.

The column comprising infantry and engineering personnel was assisting the civil administration in plugging the breach at Gharpurushottampur and preventing possible loss of life and property, a defence ministry release said.

A newly-constructed embankment at the site collapsed early Sunday at 6.45 am, and the water started entering the countryside from river Kangsabati, prompting the civil administration to seek army assistance.
