Kundapur, Mar 26: Tension prevailed in Shirur near the boundary between Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts after Friday's incidents, in connection with which three complaints have been filed. Section 144 has been clamped to prevent escalation of trouble. Additional police forces from other places were requisitioned and were deployed for maintenance of law and order.

It has been reported that a rickshaw driver, Mukhtiar, defied the instruction of police SI C D Nagaraj to stop his vehicle while the latter was doing a routine check of vehicles on Friday, March 24. Besides, Mukhtiar also sped away, in the process having his rickshaw tyres pass over constable C Rajesh Kumpala's foot.

In the meantime, one Ravindra Shetty filed a complaint that a person called Meera had given death threat to him. The SI and his team went to the spot for enquiry and the police say that a large group attacked them. Police constables Janardan and Mathew were injured in the scuffle and have been hospitalized.

The situation being tense, district SP Murugan, ASP P Harishchandra and circle inspector Shekharappa rushed to the spot and have been camping in town.
