Karkala, Mar 28: Gopinath Shetty, the prime accused in the gram panchayat member Diwakar Shetty murder died in the prisoners cell of Wenlock Hospital here on Monday March 27 night.

Diwakar Shetty of Nakre was hacked to death by Gopinath Shetty and his accomplices a year ago just before the gram panchayat elections.  Thereafter, though the police had been able to arrest the accused, the prime accused Gopinath Shetty had been absconding.

It was only on Thursday March 23 that police were able to arrest him while he was admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore for treatment.  He was produced before the Karkala Muncif Court which had remanded him for judicial custody.

While being in the sub jail at Mangalore his health condition worsened and he was admitted to prisoners’ cell in the Wenlock Hospital where he died on Monday night.

Though more details about his ailment are not available, it is said that since he was absconding from the police for long, he could not get due treatment for his health problem.  He did not even admit to the hospital owing to the fear that he would be nabbed.

The fear was proved true when he was finally arrested in a hospital at Mangalore.  But his sudden death has once again jolted the investigation of the Diwakar Shetty murder case.
