Congress shortlists single names for 18 Delhi seats

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS): Against the 27 seats the Congress lost in the 2008 Delhi assembly polls, the party has shortlisted single names for around 18, party sources said Thursday, adding the first list of candidates might be declared after Nov 9.

For these 27 seats, the Congress screening committee had to make a panel of up to three names, but that was proving to be a vexed issue for the panel.

The Congress screening committee is likely to submit the shortlisted names to the Central Election Committee, headed by party president Sonia Gandhi Nov 9. The committee will take the final call.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and state party chief J.P. Agarwal over the past week held parleys between the sitting legislators and those not wanting them to be re-nominated.

There is near consensus on 40 of the 43 sitting legislators.

Delhi has 70 assembly seats and will go to polls Dec 4.
