MP maid murder: Police seek victim's certificates

New Delhi, Nov 8 (IANS): Delhi Police have sought school certificates and birth certificate of an alleged victim of brutality by the wife of BSP parliamentarian Dhananjay Singh, intending to confirm if his age is below 18, an official said Friday.

Dhananjay Singh and his wife Jagriti Singh were arrested Tuesday for the death of their 35-year-old maid Rakhi and for beating two other servants, including the juvenile, at their government residence in South Avenue area of Delhi.

"We have sent a team to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to get school certificates of the juvenile victim so that we can confirm if he is a juvenile," a police officer told IANS.

The couple, currently lodged in the Chanakyapuri police station, have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including the Juvenile Justice Act, as they had employed a minor.

"The juvenile was brought to Delhi directly through an aide of Singh. His father is a farmer and the financial condition of the family is weak," the officer said.

A Delhi Police team is also camping in Kolkata in a bid to nab Dev Kumar, who brought Rakhi and another maid, 48-year-old Meena, to Delhi for work.

Police said that during investigation it was found that a man named Dev Kumar was nabbed in 2011 for running a fake placement agency in Delhi.

"It might be possible that he is the same Dev Kumar but we are not sure so far," the police officer said.

On Thursday, police said that they were also looking at the human trafficking angle in the case.

Dev Kumar had allegedly brought Rakhi and Meena from West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district around a year ago.

Police also said Rakhi was a Bangladeshi citizen but was living with her family in North 24 Parganas district for the past several years.

Meena in her statement to police said Jagriti beat her alleging she was having an illicit relationship with her husband.

Meanwhile, a post mortem examination was Friday conducted on Rakhi's body at Lady Hardinge Medical College and hospital. She died Monday after being brutally tortured by the MP's wife for two days.

Doctors said there were multiple injuries on her body from head to legs. But the actual cause of the death will only be revealed in the report to be released in two days.
