Margao, Apr 4: Dilip Sardesai, the only Goan-born player to have represented India in Tests, on Monday said Virender Sehwag might be demoted in the batting order to help him regain his form.

"Virender Sehwag can be dropped down the order to get back his form. Look at his performance in the past. He has not done well only in the last 15 innings or so," the former middle order batsman and one of the heroes of India's first-ever overseas Test win over the West Indies in 1971, said.

Sardesai also said that the form of Mohammed Kaif "was worrying" him too.

"He needs to perform and not rest on past laurels. Consistency is important. The same holds for Sourav Ganguly too."

He praised coach Greg Chappell, saying the Australian had the "courage of conviction" in taking important decisions.

"I feel he's the courage of conviction in taking decisions. I feel he's done a good job with captain Rahul dravid."

"Not everybody will be pleased with the decisions that are taken, but as long as we win it does not matter," Sardesai said after being felicitated with a purse of Rs 5 lac by the Goa Cricket Association.

"I was born in Goa but moved out to Mumbai. I would not have played for India had I stayed in Goa. (then) they did not have the money to honour me. Now it's done and I am happy. Better late than never," he said.

Sardesai said that if Jharkhand can provide a player like Mahendra Dhoni there was no reason why a Goa-bred player cannot play for India.

"Look at Dhoni. He's come from a place that is not considered traditional cricket power like Mumbai, Madras or Delhi.

"I feel there's no reason why a player from Goa cannot go on to represent India in the future as the infrastructure is there now unlike in the past," he said.
