New Delhi, Nov 14 (IANS): Six people - three policemen and three private detectives - have been arrested for tapping phones and seeking call data records of various politicians and businessmen here, police said Thursday.

The special cell of Delhi Police late Wednesday arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector Gopal Singh, head constable Harish and constable Harish Kumar posted in the office of the assistant commissioner of police.

The arrested private detectives are Puneet Verma, Alok Gupta and Mehraz Saifi. They live in Delhi and Noida.

Police said the six were arrested following investigation of a case of tapping the phones of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley.

Four people -- Delhi Police constable Arvind Dabas and three private detectives Anurag Singh, Neeraj Nayar and Nitish Singh -- were arrested and a chargesheet was filed in May. They were, however, granted bail.

Police said the six were initially called for questioning after which they were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including the Information Technology Act.

During the investigation in Jaitley's phone-tapping case, it was found that these men had also sought call records of other politicians as well as businessmen.

But the officials refused to reveal further details.

"They were operating for the past few years. But they stopped working since March after their associates were arrested in connection with Jaitley's phone-tapping case," a police officer told IANS.
