Sachin, a great ambassador of India, cricket: Mukherjee

New Delhi, Nov 14 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Thursday described Sachin Tendulkar as a great ambassador of India and the game of cricket.

Giving away prizes to the winning teams of a T-10 cricket tournament organised by the President's Secretariat at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the president said sports help develop character and build team spirit and camaraderie.

Tendulkar was a true icon who has inspired youth across the country by not only his stupendous records but also by his conduct on and off the field, he said.

"I join millions of adoring fans in hailing the achievements of Sachin Tendulkar as he plays his last international Test match in Mumbai. Sachin has decided to call it a day as far as cricket is concerned but I have no doubts that he will continue to serve the game and the nation," Mukherjee said.

Congratulating the players who took part in the T-10 tournament, Mukherjee said the final was held on a day the country was celebrating the birth anniversary of India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru as Children's Day.

He said it was also a special day because it was the first day of the last international Test match being played by the "cricketing legend".

Referring to the saying "The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton", the president said sports help develop character and build team spirit.

He expressed hope that sports events will enhance fellow-feeling among all members of the Rashtrapati Bhavan community.

An official release said the first T-10 tournament of the Rashtrapati Bhavan was won by Household Royals led by Meher Chand. PBG Chargers led by Major Amit Bharadwaj finished runners-up.
