Swarovski launches 3D printed look with Victoria's Secret

New York Nov 16 (IANS): Crystal brand Swarovski has pushed the boundaries of crystal design to showcase a first-of-its-kind 3D printed look for the 2013 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show here.

Swarovski, a world leader in cut crystal and fashion jewellery, and lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret joined forces with 3D printing company Shapeways to bring 3D technology to the show held Friday.

The presentation looked to the future with a sparkling Swarovski costume created using 3D printing.

The unique high-tech costume was showcased in the Snow Angel section of the show.

The costume was made to precisely fit Victoria's Secret Angel, Lindsay Ellingson from a 3D scan of her form.

Next, 3D computer printing technology was used to create the geometric filigree characteristics of the design's snowflake motif that was encrusted with millions of illuminating Swarovski crystals.

"Shapeways 3D printing technology brings an unprecedented design element to the famed
Victoria's Secret wings, showing the immense opportunity 3D printing brings to creating beautiful, customisable items," said Peter Weijmarshausen, CEO, Shapeways.

Since 2002, Swarovski has been adding sparkling glamour to the celebrated catwalk
extravaganza by exclusively providing the crystals that adorn the costumes, jewellery, accessories and footwear by Nicholas Kirkwood.

This year, 20 custom creations were modelled by some of Victoria’s Secrets’ famous Angels.

“For over 100 years, Swarovski has been the first to bring the finest products, services and innovations to the marketplace,” said Alexander Wellhoefer, senior vice president, Swarovski North America.

The 2013 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will air Dec 10 on the CBS television network.
