Mangalore, Apr 8: A protest in support of Medha Patkar, leader of Narmada Bachao Andolan, who is on a hunger strike, will be organized in front of the deputy commissioner’s office, by the Social Justice Forum here on Saturday April 8.
Patkar is opposing the raising of the height of the Sardar Sarovar dam, which if done, will see the displacement of nearly 27,000 families.
The purpose of the protest is to oppose the lack of interest shown by the government in this regard and also to urge the government to arrive at an amicable solution. Though the Supreme Court has ordered the resettlement of all displaced families at least six months before any decision is taken to increase the height of the dam, the government has ignored the resettlement requirements, said a press release.
