JD-U leader questions Bharat Ratna to Tendulkar

Patna, Nov 18 (IANS): A Janata Dal-United MP Monday questioned awarding India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, to cricketer Sachin Tendulkar instead of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand.

"I fail to understand why Dhyan Chand was ignored and Sachin Tendulkar was given Bharat Ratna," JD-U's member of parliament Shivanand Tiwari told media persons here.

Tiwari said the ministry concerned had shortlisted the name of Dhyan Chand for giving the Bharat Ratna.

"Dhyan Chand was incredible for having taken hockey to international level for the country when there was no corporate and powerful media. His magic impressed even fascist leaders of Germany who offered him money, comfortable and luxurious life but Dhyan Chand stuck to India," he said.

"Sachin Tendulkar was not playing free of cost. Sachin has made crores of rupees by helping corporates to market cricket in the country," Tiwari said.

Tiwari said the Bharat Ratna has lost its importance now.

"It is time for a nationwide debate on Bharat Ratna and to whom it should be given. If latest trend is any indication, then it could be given to any corporate sponsored leader," Tiwari said.

After Tiwari questioned Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar, JD-U spokesperson said the party has nothing to do with Tiwari's statement.

JD-U chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, however, welcomed Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar.

Scientist C.N.R. Rao and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. Their names were announced Saturday, the day Sachin Tendulkar played his 200th and last Test match of his career in Mumbai.

In India sports category, all awards and respect goes to how famous he/she is. In India cricket is a famous sport than any other sports. So even any other sports person achieved anything above and beyond he/she never get Bharat Ratna or any other great awards. If you want to be shine in sports and make millions, send your kid to cricket training camps and recognize his talent and make him a cricket player. He will be rich and famous along with his parents.
Don’t want any recognition and just achieve your goal? Then any other sports are fine.
All other sports person can achieve the great but don’t dream about any awards and millions. Its only reserve for cricket.
Just open Google and see a cricket player’s asset earnings. you cannot believe a cricket player who played 10 matches for India and his properties and Bentley cars and Lamborghini.. You think? Any other sports person can make in few appearance in their carrier? No way. So Only Cricket, whether your kid will success or not please just try.

Sachin Tendulkar is a great player no doubt...but all this hype is too much. There is vote bank politics in awarding B.R.P . Don't Milkha Singh, Leander Peas, V.Anand, PT Usha, Gopichand, etc deserve Bharat Ratna much earlier and more than Sachin? In cricket, what less are Dravid, VVS, Sourav, etc?

Tiwariji... correct yourself, Sachin was not playing for money, he was playing for the nation. He was in demand and was a key player, so was getting money from sponsors. He truly deserves Bharataratna for his achievements.

Don't just question, why Sachin was given 'Bharataratna', ask 'why not dhyan chand?' instead.

Keep assumptions and politics at least from this....we are day-by-day becoming sycophants and cynics....if Dhyanchand, did not receive the Bharat Ratna, why blame Sachin? Actually sports were never considered for Bharat Ratna prior to this...for me Sachin stands head and shoulders above the rest...one may like it or not...but Dhyanchand played only his opponents on the field...but that isn't the case with Sachin...right from his debut to retirement, he played under such public glare and scrutiny that no other sports person, ever did it and all these 24 years he was not involved in a single on or off field controversy...

Dhyanchand is role model for aspiring hockey players and so is Milka for athletes...Vishy has inspired chess world in India and Paes' contribution to reviving tennis glory cannot be denied...but Sachin is just not a role model to aspiring cricketers but to all....his humility, simplicity, philanthropy etc are to be emulated...this is not the end of the road...one should be happy that sports too will be counted for Bharat Ratna hereafter....but a first sports person to have Received Bharat Ratna could not have been anyone else than Sachin...our prejudices towards cricket, our prejudices towards Congress cannot be greater than Bharat Ratna and Sachin's credentials to be the deserving percipient of India's highest civilian award....why blame Congress? If JD (U) was interested, why they did not award Bharat Ratna to Dhyanchand during their (NDA) regime? They had 5 years and could have awarded at least 2-3 sports persons...the last thing we need is a politics in Bharat Ratna....it has never been done and hope it will never be again... Dhyanchand deserved this award...but it did not happen...it has happened with Lal Bahadur Shastri and even Mahatma Gandhiji...but just because they were not awarded, calling potshots now or stalling the future recipients would be childish…

Actually the reason why Bongis (BJPians) & Sanghis are against the award to Sachin Tendulkar is not because they have anything against Sachin Tendulkar as such but because it was the Congress/UPA govt. which got the credit for choosing and making that award to Sachin Tendulkar thus stealing the limelight from the BJP in this matter.

It is pure 'ENVY' nothing else.

Bharath Ratna to Sachin is pulery Congress's plan to polarize Marati Votes. They know very well that they are going to loose Maharastra state this time.

Having said that, Sachin is the legend in the cricketing world, give him the top most honor in sports no issues, but its entirely wrong to confirm him an award to which category he does not belong to. No big party is raising the issue because of votes. If Sachin was a non Marati, Shivsena or MNS would have been the first to cry ploy here. Its totally unneceptable. In 1928 at Amsterdam,India beat host Netherlands 3-0 in the final,1932 at Los Angeles,India beat host USA 24-1 in the final In Berlin 1936 India beat host Germany 8-1 in the final in front of Hitler, Between these 3 olympic games India scored 102 goals and conceded just 3 goals. That's called world domination of epic proportions. This team is still revered in world Hockey as the greatest of all time, and Dhyan Chand was the driving force behind this great team. He scored 33 goals in 3 Olympic games. If Indian Govt had to Give Bharat Ratna to any sports Legend then Dhyan Chand deserved more than any.
I really feel soldiers who gave their lives at borders so that we can enjoy a secure life within deserve Bharatratna than anyone. Pure votebank politics by SCAMGRESS.

Its irony that Bharat Ratna awarded to MGR, Rajiv Gandhi and Sachin by Cong ( I ) Govt for the sake of Vote bank.....

1.The greatest tragedy is that Iron Man of India who merged princely state and formed strong Union of India has left out.....and later awarded for sake of vote bank politics...

    2. Baba Amte, a social activist, recipient of the Raymon Magsisi award ( Asia's Nobel award ) left out from list........

    3. Late Field Marshal Gen.Sam Maneck shaw hero of 1971 Indo-Pak war not even listed in Bharath Ratna award.....( Nether President nor PM or Defence minister attended his funeral )
