President, PM pay homage to Indira Gandhi


New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi Tuesday led the nation in paying homage to late prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 96th birth anniversary.

The leaders offered floral tributes at Indira Gandhi's memorial Shakti Sthal here on the west bank of the Yamuna, not far from Mahatma Gandhi's samadhi at Raj Ghat.

Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also visited the memorial.

Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar also paid tributes to the late leader, often described as the "Iron Lady of India" at the Parliament House complex.

Indira Gandhi was born Nov 19, 1917, and was the first woman prime minister of India.
