Mumbai, Nov 21: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela has been mired in legal proceedings for a considerable time now and the Deepika Padukone - Ranveer Singh starrer was today banned by the Allahabad High court in UP.

Alongside the cancellation of the Censor Board Certification granted to the film, the petitioner had also requested the court to remove controversial dialogues from the movie.

The verdict comes on the petition filed by the Maryada Purshottam Bhagwan Ramleela Samhiti from Bahraich which beseeched the court to revoke the Censor Board Certificaiton granted to the film.

The romantic saga that was apparently inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, was believed to have hurt the sentiments of many devout Hindu's by associating the sacred name of their God with violence, sex and mujra as portrayed in the film.

Released on 15 November, the movie has been raking in considerable revenue for its makers despite the legal coils that threaten its early demise from the silver screen.

The Maryada Purshottam Bhagwan Ramleela Samhiti maintained that the title of the movie reflected negatively on the original pious story of the life and noble deeds of Lord Rama in the epic Ramayana. The honourable deeds of Rama resonate in many Hindu hearts and minds, and they believed that the association of Rama's name with a story rife with brutality was not appropriate.
