Basketball star Rose undergoes surgery, will miss season

Washington, Nov 26 (IANS): Basketball team Chicago Bulls All-Star guard Derrick Rose underwent surgery on his right knee and Bulls announced the 25-year-old former Most Valued Player (MVP) would miss the rest of the season because of the injury.

Rose was injured during the Bulls' 98-95 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers Friday. He made 20 points before tearing his medial meniscus in the third quarter, reports Xinhua.

"Earlier this morning, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose underwent successful surgery to repair his previously torn medial meniscus in his right knee," the club said in a statement. "Rose is out for the remainder of the season."

Brian Cole, who helped repair the left knee for Rose, performed Monday's surgery. Rose will be out for 18 months.

The 2010-2011 season MVP averaged 15.9 points and 4.3 assists for the Bulls in the 2013-2014 season.

Rose's college coach John Calipari supported Rose.

"If there's anyone who can bounce back from this, it's @drose," tweeted Calipari. "My message to Derrick would be to stay strong and stay focused. Love you, kid."
