'India Corner' at Indonesia's Udayana University


Jakarta, Nov 27 (IANS): An "India Corner" has been set up at the Udayana University in Denpasar in Bali as part of an initiative by the Indian embassy here and the consulates in Bali and Medan to enhance educational cooperation with the Indonesian academic community and students.

During a brief ceremony, India's ambassador Gurjit Singh gifted several books to the university, which will form part of the "India Corner".

These select books by Indian writers and digital material pertain to various subjects, including best of Indian literature by Rabindranath Tagore, Indian classical dances, Mahatma Gandhi’s biography, My Experience with Truth, educational reforms and planning challenge, good governance delivering corruption-free public services, ayurveda, empowerment of rural women, Valmiki Ramayana and others.

University rector Ketut Suastika hailed the establishment of the “India Corner” and hoped that agreements with universities and other institutions in India for exchange of scholars and students would be concluded soon.

He welcomed the idea of establishing Chairs of Indian studies, including for Sanskrit and ayurveda, at Udayana University.

He said these academic interactions will help in nurturing the centuries-old civilisational links with India.

The Indian ambassador wished the "India Corner" develops into an "India Room" for which India will provide more educational material based on the feedback from the students and faculty of the university.

He told the gathering that at an event Thursday in Bahasa, a book on "Studying in India" would be launched, which will provide comprehensive information on educational opportunities in India, including several scholarships and self-financing schemes for pursuing higher education in Indian universities.
