Chidambaram rejects Modi's 'lesson in economy'

New Delhi, Nov 30 (PTI): In another dig at Narendra Modi, Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate was giving his "first lesson in economy" and denied he had ever said that buying gold causes inflation.

"After history lesson, Narendra Modi has delivered his first lesson in economics...I recall having said on many occasions that buying gold, which is almost entirely imported, worsens current account deficit (CAD). I don't recall saying that buying gold causes inflation," Chidambaram said in a statement here.

He was apparently referring to several goof-ups by Modi in his recent speeches relating to ancient history and some other events

With an obvious tinge of sarcasm, Chidambaram asked economists to "take note of the new lesson" by Modi.

The Finance Minister was responding to the reported remarks of Modi at an election rally at Jodhpur in which he had said that Chidambaram has attributed inflation to buying gold.

"I am not as educated as him...but I know inflation is not because of buying gold but due to corruption," Chidambaram's statement quoted Modi's remarks in newspapers.

Modi has been under attack from opponents over his remarks in election speeches which were not in sync with historic facts. Earlier at a rally in Patna, Modi said that Chandragupta belonged to the Gupta dynasty.

At the same rally, he praised the "might of Bihar" saying that Alexander's army conquered the world but was defeated by the Biharis. In reality, Alexander’s army neither crossed the Ganga nor was it defeated by Biharis.

At Kheda in Gujarat, Modi had slammed Congress for not bringing back the ashes of freedom fighter Shyamaji Krishna Varma from Switzerland. Instead of naming Shyamaji Krishna Varma, he referred to Shyama Prasad Mookherjee, who founded the Jan Sangh which later became the BJP.

However, he later apologised for the mistake.

Just the qualifications and Paper Certificates are not enough. One should be able to use that knowledge in real life. But MM has failed to make any use of his knowledge gained in foreign Universities.
As regards Chidu, while he is in Congress, his Wife and daughter were Tax & Legal Consultants for the Head of Mining Mafia of Bellary - Janardhan Reddy of BJP. So, when it comes to making money the Chidu family never discriminates between Cong & BJP.

MR. XAVIER ADOLF: Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your response to my comment, I do consider like a
    "Nobel Prize".

We all need enough to live comfortably, but whenever our focus of life is totally concentrated on adding more to it through wasting our peace and energy, that is totally a waste of time and energy. As human beings, we have a moral-social and spiritual obligation to look after the crying world across us, but in our blind chase to hoard more wealth as a sign-board of success in life, we are totally missing the purpose of life. I live 15 miles away from a small city, once boasted with the highest percentage of millionaires/population in the U.S. Now, that city is listed as one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. with the highest unemployment and homeless people. I get depressed to see that city.

In your great comment, second paragraph is shedding light on certain events, yet to be seen. Thank you again and such response from readers motivates me to write at this retired age. GOD BLESS YOU.

That is well said Mathew. You really put it beautifully which is boiling deep inside on every one's mind and heart but couldn't express due to lack of communication skills...Listen to Marc Faber what he says "Stocks in US have no more values in them, it is bubble everywhere, bubble in stocks, bubble in bonds and bubble in every class of investment. The value of the dollar is the cost of printing it...." As you said, this economy only makes rich richer and they have easy access and publicity in the media to frame a rosy picture of the economy where as the truth comes out of the mouth of people like me and you, which has no recognition...

We are not the 'Game Changers' and the Faulty Play continues here. India has fallen in the same path of US and there is a narrow rise in the Indian Stock Markets recently which makes new high's. There should have been Euphoria and celebration when the markets see new high's, however, it has produced lot of Panic and Fear in the minds of investors as this narrow rise won't sustain longer. Common People should get ready to embrace poverty in India in the near future once this bubble burst and bad governance continues to linger.

"Economics is not a precise science like maths or chemistry". Economists from the famous Universities like Yale-Harward-Wartons-Oxford-Cambridge etc differ in their economic predictions and calculations. Some of the Economists became famous because their economic planning at that critical time created positive results. Maynard Keynes was a well known British Economist of Cambridge University, and another well known U.S. Economist John Kenneth Galbraith(U.S. Ambassador to India under President John F. Kennedy. He was very close friend Pundit Nehru and got advice from Mr. Galbraith. Their Cambridge connections made them very close friends) was his disciple, but Kenneth Galbraith had some critical disagreement with Keynes. Now, the world economy is in a total confusion, Economists during the last six years made many predictions, did some emergency surgeries and patch up job however the patient is still in the CCU. Any economy in which, some at the top make big income and the bottom level living in starvation, that economy will not grow for ever, there will be bubble bursting day. There is no "jobless" recovery in any economy. Stock price booming is not a clear indication that the economy is getting stronger. The wealthy play in the stock market, and their chess game of stock market gambling is not a solid sign of economic recovery.

Congress may go out in 2014, but modi winning and bjp in power will always remain a dream!!just like Advanis dream of a pm!!!! We should ignore the antics of Prime Minister Nominee as he may not know what he is talking about. He only recites the material given by his PR team without understanding the basics.

We should not get surprised by the meaningless statements because of his limited knowledge about Indian economy.

So, Mr Brainy Economist Chidambaram, your handling of the country's economy still ain't all that hot on the ground, is it? Ask the mango men: Current Account Deficit, Inflation... these still seem to hurt him in the same place. Who cares if the hole you cut in our pockets is with a knife or scissors. A chaiwala who can get the economy humming is lots better than over-qualified Brainy Economists who only seem to improve their own party's economy. Forget CAD type of deficit. Please enlighten us when has Chiddu in history EVER given a budget with a surplus. I am waiting. Chiddu is a lawyer btw and not an economist.
