New Delhi, Dec 3: Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly, a former Supreme Court Judge who had been accused by a law intern of sexual assault was asked by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj to step down from his post as Chairperson of West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC). Ganguly, when asked about what he intended to do, said that he was still watching the situation and was yet to decide on whether he would resign from the post.

After being identified last week, as the prime accused in the sexual assault crime made public by a female law intern, Justice Ganguly and the lady concerned presented their statements. They did so, before a panel comprising of three serving judges appointed by the Supreme court to look into the truth of the allegations.

In the state of West Bengal, the reigning political party Trinamool Congres' senior party leaders have demanded Judge Ganguly's resignation from the West Bengal Human Rights Commission.

There were others, such as Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir and Former Attorney General of India, who opined that it was not fair to defame a former judge until his involvement in the crime had been proven.

Retired woman IAS officer Promila Shanker and Delhi University's former Dean of Law Faculty S N Singh asked for the judge to be tried in a court of law by the same procedure as carried out on any common citizen who might be similarly accused.
