Men are scared to talk to women colleagues nowadays: Farooq Abdullah

Farooq Abdullah withdraws controversial remarks on women

Updated

New Delhi, Dec 6 (NDTV): Union minister Farooq Abdullah said today that he regrets stating he is "afraid of talking to women" because he is worried that he could "end up in jail."  He claimed that his remarks had been misconstrued and that he has "the greatest respect for women."

His comments were excoriated for being misogynistic and insensitive at a time when the country is grappling with sexual harassment and violence against women.

Earlier today, Mr Abdullah said while entering Parliament, "I am afraid of talking to women. In fact I don't even want to keep a woman secretary, God forbid, if there's a complaint against me and I end up in jail. Such is the state of affairs today. I agree that incidents of rape have increased...but this has to stop somewhere."

He added quickly, " I'm not blaming the girls, I'm blaming society itself."

Among those who demanded an apology was his son, Omar, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, who tweeted, "I'm sure the attempt wasn't to trivialise (the) important issue of women's security so I hope dad apologises for the misplaced attempt at humour."

Activists have been stressing that while discussing and punishing harassment in the workplace is long over-due, employers must not be allowed to use the current discourse as a reason to avoid hiring women.

"When men say they are afraid of hiring or talking to women as Farooq Abdullah did. They are visibly a victim of their own insecurity!" tweeted former IPS officer Kiran Bedi.

"He is saying that there is no difference in speaking to a woman and sexual harassment. He means it is a mistake if she reports a case of sexual harassment," said activist Kavita Krishnan.

In two recent cases, women have come forward to complain about powerful male superiors. Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal has been jailed on rape charges after a young woman reporter said he had sexually assaulted her twice in Goa last month.

A young woman lawyer blogged recently that a retired Supreme Court judge had harassed her in a hotel room a year ago. The supreme Court has identified and indicted Justice AK Ganguly for "unwelcome verbal/non-verbal conduct of sexual nature" in a hotel room in December last year.

Men are scared to talk to women colleagues nowadays: Farooq Abdullah

New Delhi, Dec 6 (Agencies) : At a time when the nation is faced with a debate on sexual harassment at workplace, National Conference (NC) patron Farooq Abdullah said men are scared to talk to women colleagues nowadays.

“We don't want women as personal secretaries. Men are scared to talk to women, fearing they might end up in jail,” a TV channel quoted Abdullah, the Union minister of new and renewable energy, as saying.

“Rapes are increasing. I don't blame women for it. The society is to be blamed,” Abdullah, the patron of the ruling party in Jammu and Kashmir, added, triggering a row against the backdrop of harassment allegations being levelled against Justice (retired) AK Ganguly and Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Smriti Irani reacted, saying, “It's a demeaning comment by a senior politician like Farooq Abdullah.” Congress' Ambika Soni defended Abdullah. "He is a broad-minded person. I don't think he said it in a serious manner," she said.

Farooq Abdulla is absolutely right. If a female secretary or office staff, want to fix any of their male colleagues, she can just file a false FIR about sexual harassment and he will be behind bars for a few days. Easy to spoil one's good name and take revenge.

Well said Harold. This is a reality in the cities in India. I do support any form of sexual harassment against women but I have come across several cases where women pretend to be victims for getting revenge on a male colleague or just to hurt him.

Laws should be totally unbiased otherwise misuse would be easy.

BTW what is tickling you so much ? Why so nervous ? Why are you stalking me and other anti-Modi commentators ? It only goes to show that our comments really sting you and you are extremely insecure about Feku's chances of winning.

    Relax take a deep breath.

    Dear Declan,

S.V.Pai, Karwar is so nervous of BJP's sitting in opposition for nearly 60 years. Since 60 years they have been optimistic of BJP rule and they fool the citizens.

Gujarat is a perfect example of fooling citizens by the BJP.

Now his answer will be wait till assembly elections are over. Then once again he will say wait till 2014 and so on and so on.

Where as the congress is not hell bent on to oppress or suppress opposition but bjp's are.

My intention is bjp must be there forever in opposition because their ruling is fooling the citizens.

Many women can use laws to favor them and frame a false case against their male employers. Now it becomes the responsibility of the man to prove that he is innocent. The society, his own family members become suspicious of him. He might face humiliation for no reason and loses productive time for frivolous cases. Thus institutions should distinguish genuine cases from fake ones. Stringent punishment must be handed to the lady if it is proven that the case was a false one.

Why is this comment being made into such a big issue? Isn't there a chance that if a boss admonishes a lady employee she could, I said she could create a problem for him. Of course, notwithstanding, this thought must not create any impediments in the careers of women.

those afraid and demanding for gender neutral law should come up with data number or rape attempt on men till now. Also, to a woman her self respect and purity means everything in India. so she will not cry any false incident which never happened to her as she is well aware that how a society treats a raped and sexually assaulted women which means that u should not be afraid in just talking or hiring a women employee. not the laws...its the devil inside u which is frightening you..Talk some sense for god's sake

Roshan, you are absolutely right as much as Mr. Farooq Abdullah.

The current situation in our country is similar to the fear prevailing in Saudi Arabia.

Looks like the new rape law has given an upper hand for women and some females abuse it for targeting guys for even silly incidents.

Recently, the actress Sheweta Menon in Kerala made a big hue and cry when her shoulders got rubbed with the MP's in a big crowd.

Having said, the genuine sexual violence on women should not be overlooked either.

Include Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai too. We know whose patronage they have.

Asaram said it was a Conspiracy of 'Madam and her son' alluding to Sonia & Rahul Gandhi to divert attention from his alleged crime and escape the rape charges just like Tejpal blamed the BJP. Both are accused rapists but Asaram Bapu has an added charge as he is also an accused pedophile.
