Anti-Congress vote was against Sonia, Rahul: Smriti Irani

Kolkata, Dec 8 (IANS): BJP MP Smriti Irani Sunday said the anti-Congress vote in the assembly polls reflected the popular mood against the party's top leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Irani said the Bharatiya Janata Party's showing in elections to four state assemblies was only a precursor to the party's "decisive victory" in the 2014 general elections.

"This anti-Congress vote is not only due to its bad policies, corruption, inflation, but also the vote is against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi," Irani told reporters here while launching a campaign for the "Statue of Unity", the world's tallest statue, of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to be put up in Gujarat.

Notwithstanding the "malicious campaign mounted" by the BJP's opposition, the actress-turned-politician said people were inclined towards her party despite "stunts" pulled by the Congress.

On the Federal Front mooted by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Irani said: "The results which you saw today was so decisive... four-five months before the general elections that gives you a very decisive kind of an indication that people want to have a BJP-led government at the centre."

She also hoped that other political groups would partner with the BJP, seeing the party's sweeping victory.

"BJP is poised towards a decisive victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and it's very obvious that all political organisations who want to contribute to development in this country will recognise the clamour of people who are gravitating towards the BJP, and join hands with us," Irani said.
