Centre to seek report on Muzaffarnagar riot victims

New Delhi, Dec 10 (IANS): Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Tuesday said the central government will seek a report from Uttar Pradesh, following complaints about relief and rehabilitation of riot victims in Muzaffarnagar.

"I will seek a report," Shinde said in response to a question about difficulties faced by the victims.

Over 60 people were killed in riots in Muzaffarnagar and nearby areas in September.

A group of civil society activists, who visited the riot-affected areas in Muzaffarnagar, last week said the Uttar Pradesh government should reopen relief camps for victims and reconsider giving Rs.5 lakh to those not wishing to return to the camps.

They also said the state government was not doing enough to restore confidence among the displaced people.
