Pope Francis named Time's Person of the Year

New York, Dec 11 (PTI): Pope Francis has been named Person of the Year 2013 by Time magazine for changing the perception of the Catholic Church in an extraordinary way within just nine months in office.

Time said the first non-European Pope in 1,200 years is poised to transform a place that measures change by the century.

"The heart is a strong muscle; he's proposing a rigorous exercise plan. And in a very short time, a vast, global, ecumenical audience has shown a hunger to follow him.

"For pulling the papacy out of the palace and into the streets, for committing the world's largest church to confronting its deepest needs and for balancing judgement with mercy, Pope Francis is TIME's 2013 Person of the Year," the magazine's Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs said.

NSA leaker Edward Snowden is the runner-up with the magazine saying that the 30-year-old computer whiz "pulled off the year's most spectacular heist. Exiled from his country, he has become the doomsayer of the information age."

The final 10 contenders for Time's Person of the Year were US President Barack Obama, Syrian President Bashar Assad, Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, pop singer Miley Cyrus, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Gay rights activist Edith Windsor.

BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi was among the 42 people shortlisted by Time but he did not make it to the final 10.

On the 76-year-old Pope, Time said his focus on compassion, along with a general aura of merriment not always associated with princes of the church has made him "something of a rock star".

Over three million people turned out to see him on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro last summer and the crowds in St Peter's Square are ecstatic to see him, it said.

Francesco is the most popular male baby name in Italy.

Truly great man.. I know it is not good to compare, but the previous pope was more interested in doctrine, whereas Pope Francis is truly concerned with the poor... Even when he was Archbishop, he led a very simple life with few needs... Perfect time for the world to get a great humane leader.

Great comment. The Bible says ' blessed is he that considereth the poor". JESUS has repeatedly exhorted HIS followers to take care of the poor. The poor are really Christ's representatives, and it is a Christian's duty to help those who are in need. JESUS said " The poor always ye have with you".

The practical religion is to care care of the hurting humanity in front of us, that is indeed the real worship of GOD. I am very critical of those people who are too passionate to worship in the fancy places of worship surrounded with huts and crying people. Thank GOD for Pope Francis, who is true follower of Christ.

What a great news! Time magazine ed Pope Francis as its Person of the Year on Wednesday, saying the Catholic Church´s new leader has changed the perception of the 2,000-year old institution in an extraordinary way in a short time. I appreciate especially that Pope Francis wants to make the Church a “field hospital,” a body that treats the poor, the suffering, and the injured. That is his vision, and, within a year, he has managed to himself into every divisive cultural issue. Now, as the first Pope of that New World, he is leading a pastoral reformation that develops further the New Evangelisation that Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict began with the complex and academic intricacies of theology. Catholics must take the words of Christ and his Traditions into the streets, from the very churches that inspire reverence amongst the squalor of modern brutish architecture.

Or for example, people all over the world appreciate Pope Francis for his modesty and for his public acts of humility, from washing the feet of criminals to embracing a disfigured man. All that has reshaped the attitudes of many people to the Catholic Church. Pope Francis has been at the centre of public attention since he took office in March, showing more openness, compared to the previous popes. Since then he has shaped the global conversation on religion, urging the Church to be more welcoming, less cold and dogmatic. Or by his attitude towards homosexuality:”If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge.”
Time magazine said in its cover story:”What makes this pope so important is the speed with which he has captured the imaginations of millions who had given up on hoping for the church at all.”
Pope Francis is a gift, and we shall appreciate that he will be able to bring about reforms within the Church. Within a short time he has shown that he reaches out to people from all walks of life.

    Best regards

My friend, as you have said, all the Christian denominations must go back 2000 years, and learn what JESUS did in HIS brief earthly ministry of three and a half years. Preached the good news of salvation totally free of cost-fed the hungry and healed the sick.

Now the Church world is totally saturated with traditions and dogmas, and the blind followers are not worshiping the real GOD or following HIS commandments in the daily lives.

Pope Francis is going to create greater spiritual and social revolution throughout the world starting with the 1.2 billion Catholic Church, and the impact will touch other Christian denominations and religions. How greatly, the non-Christians are respecting this Pope is the clear indication that they are respecting JESUS CHRIST indirectly in their hearts.

    Dear friend,
Heavenly Father God created Man and woman in his own image and likeness. He created everything of this universe with love!
God is speaking to the world through many good prophets that are sent to the world to prepare humanity to face a world in decline.
God has not created any religion.
For there is only one God and that is God of all the universes, God of all the races. God has a Plan of redemption for each one.

I am so glad that our Pope has been named Time's Person of the Year. And I am even more pleased that we have persons like Pope Francis in our midst today. He stands out for his simplicity, compassion and concern for the people. His way of living should be an eye-opener to make of the current day priests who are only interested in wealth and opulence these days. I pray God that they shed their luxurious ways of living and take a leaf out of Pope's book.

A very good ion by Time Magazine, a very interesting man of faith, Pope Francis is a breath of fresh air in the hierarchy of the church and truly a Holy Father who wants to lead his people, Pope Francis is the first pope, I have ever seen practicing what he says, cleaning the house of dirty deeds, and recovering the sense of their own teachings in a low pitched pragmatic up to date.
    God Bless Pope Francis...

I read in a paper that Pope Francis visits the poor areas of the Vatican in the night very secretly and help people. GOD was so gracious to put him as the Pope of the Universal Catholic Church.
It is high time for a great spiritual renewal. " A minister cannot preach the glories of heaven while ignoring the social conditions in his own community that cause (people) an earthly hell" Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Church, the body of CHRIST has to wake up now to help the people living in desperate conditions, which is commanded by JESUS CHRIST to be HIS real follower.
