15 killed in Iran car pile up

Tehran, Dec 12 (IANS): At least 15 people were killed in a car pile up in Isfahan province in Iran Thursday.

Four cars collided on a road leading to Naeen city and three of them caught fire, said traffic police officer Colonel Gholami.

Fifteen people were killed in the mishap, said the police officer, adding that 11 of the victims were Afghan nationals and that eight others, two Afghan nationals and six Iranians, were injured, Xinhua reported citing local media.

The high speed of one of the cars carrying the Afghan nationals was the cause of the accident, Gholami said.

In September, 40 people were killed in a car accident on the Tehran-Qom highway in northern Iran.

Official figures show that more than 20,000 people are killed and 200,000 injured in traffic accidents in Iran annually. Inexperienced drivers, low efficiency of the cars and bad road conditions are blamed for the accidents.
