Stretch marks major concern post-pregnancy

New Delhi, Dec 14 (IANS): Among other issues related to weight, a study shows that a major area of concern for new mothers are stretch marks which appear post-pregnancy.

Yummy Mummy survey by Nielson Group states that 90 percent of expecting mothers in India agree that stretch marks are one of the most worrisome issues with respect to their looks, said a statement.

There are many myths regarding stretch marks which people believe. As many as 75 percent of new mothers believe that stretch marks only appear on the stomach. However, this is not true.

“It is common to develop stretch marks on the breasts, thighs, hips, lower back and buttocks. Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, but it is more likely for them to form where larger amounts of fats are stored in the body,” says gynaecologist Kiran Coelho, whose client list features big names like Shilpa Shetty, Lara Dutta and Mandira Bedi.

As many as 52 percent of mothers feel that stretch marks have no cure whereas a good diet can provide an effective cure.

“Pregnancy stretch marks can be prevented by keeping the skin hydrated. Drink sufficient water and eat foods that are rich in Vitamin E such as nuts, citrus fruits, bell peppers. Use a dry oil which has a blend of natural plant extracts such as calendula, lavender, rosemary and chamomile along with Vitamin A and E,” Coelho said.

A total of 76 percent of Indian women also feel that wearing the traditional Indian outfit- a sari - also becomes an issue after delivering a child.
