  • Current record-holder Gopal Kharvi suspects hidden motive of ruining his reputation

Kandapur, Apr 26 ( Wednesday, 11-45 pm): Dayananda Kharvi of Bengre, said to be a trainer with NITK Suratkal, who had claimed to set a new record by swimming 150 kilometres day and night on Tuesday and Wednesday from Gangolli to Mangalore has not kept his word.

He had made the claim by convening a media meet on Tuesday. The record swim was to begin at 6 pm. Swimming non-stop through Tuesday full night and throughout the daytime on Wednesday, he was to cover the 150-kilometre distance and set a record.

Observing rough sea at Gangolli, he reportedly changed places of starting the feat. On enquiries with him by Gopal Kharvi's friends, he reportedly gave lame excuses. Gopal's men made enquiries at Hangarkatta and other places, even at Malpe, but even up to midnight there were no signs of Dayananda having begun his course from any of the nearby points.

Now Gopal Kharvi is of the opinion that Dayananda's motive was only to discredit the former's achievement. He too intends to convene a press meet to clarify matters. He has also challenged Dayananda that he should not swim in the night. Gopal has also thrown a challenge others to float on sea water for at least three hours, with hands and feet firmly bound.
