We were frightened, says Indian domestic worker's family

New York, Dec 20 (PTI): The family of Sangeeta Richard, the former maid of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade, has alleged that they were frightened on several occasions as demands were made on them to bring the domestic worker back to India.

A report in the New York Times quoted a person close to Richard's family as describing several episodes that frightened her family members.

In one case, Richard's husband Philip, while bicycling with one of his children, was confronted by a man with a gun who demanded that his wife return home, the report said.

Richard's husband said he had been called more than once by Khobragade's father, who asked him to make his wife return to India, the person said.

In another instance, Richard's husband was interrogated by the police in India about his wife's whereabouts in the US, the report said.

1.Many people are missing the point here. It is not whether maid is right or Diplomat is right, the question is whether USA is right. There are agreed protocols to deal with such incidence. Handcuffing and stripping and searching body cavities even before your guilt is proved is sexual assault and as this woman is representing India it is an attack on India. This same US has no guts to do this on Saudi and Russian diplomats for bigger alleged offences. Every Indian should condemn it-

2nd point-Many are saying US laws are same for rich and poor, it is not like India etc. This is not true-It is worse than India We should be proud of our judiciary (remember many cases where supreme court has held corrupt politicians to account). In USA a large number of Blacks and Latinos are put to death sentence in name of criminal justice. Many studies have shown that this is racially motivated where black suspects are tried by all white juries. Many blacks are in jails doing hard labour for long terms for petty crimes which is a modern day slavery. So USA criminal justice is highly racist and is not same for all.

3rd point-This USA who is crying so much for a payment dispute and who is so eager to bring "justice" has acted completely differently in case of Raymond Davis-a private contractor working for US embassy in Pakistan. He shot dead 2 innocent Pakistanis. US argued he has diplomatic immunity (even though he was not a diplomat) as he was contracted by embassy and bullied Pakistan and paid money to victims family to keep them quiet and got him freed. Barack Obama himself told Pakistan not to prosecute saying "there is a broader principle at stake which needs to be upheld"-not upheld in case of India

This is not a battle for justice between a diplomat & house maid!
This is US PRO Team trying to cover their errors & criminal acts & Indian Government who means what it says.
Many have fallen for US stories, but will realize the real Big Player is US State Department.
China would have given them fitting reply without adopting diplomatic restraint India has shown thus far.

as everyone commented about the maid, the case should be investigated thoroughly before any conclusion.
i believe there is larger conspiracy behind this incident, what was the need for a strip search and jailing with drug addicts when several other empty cells in the jail were available even for a ordinary citizen. mistreat of a diplomat in this way is humiliation for any country..
if american diplomats enjoying number of privileges outside the protocol as a goodwill gesture, it should be reciprocated by america as well. i am very pleased by indian governments counter measures. may be the diplomat is working for RAW, and the americans may know about it but can't prove.

All the Indian politicians and the Media are blindly supporting Indian Diplomat Khobragade, but completely neglecting Indian House-maid, without ascertaining the version of that Poor helpless house-maid. Both are Indian Citizens with equal rights, then why this discrimination ?
Alleged Forgery of Work Visa, maid's Passport, and Unauthorized Alteration of maid's Employment Agreement by Khobragade is being fully overlooked. These all are grave criminal acts as per US law.

I cannot speak for others. If the diplomat is guilty then she should be punished. I am only against the way the authorities arrested and humiliated her. As I have commented earlier, she could have been summoned, questioned and then taken into custody. The way she was arrested, handcuffed, strip searched, cavity searched was totally uncalled for. That was not a humiliation of the diplomat alone but of all Indians. The ignorant US authorities have done it in the past with our former President, diplomats, ministers and other well known celebrities. It is time we stood up to such treatment, That's all.

I have been reading and seeing the incident of consular and maid in USA. What is the real truth nobody is coming out. Now the above story baffles me more. I only hope and pray that good and honest people should not suffer. The fight between elders of 2 different families is leading to making things difficult for children.

Stories can be concocted by anyone to prove their baseless allegations.
Indian Media & Press would have come to their aid if the story was true, but when US government machinery is with you to tarnish image of young diplomat, I wonder why they migrated so easily while many are waiting from many years!
Insulting & comparing our representatives with Gangsters is wild allegation.
If at all Devyani's father contacted them then it was their duty to safeguard the domestic maid whom they had sponsored & taken to US, otherwise they might have blackmailed the Diplomat as she had done something to their daughter & homicide charges might have been framed as well.
If US was so concerned with human rights of people are they saints in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, or Libya?
Arrogance won't pay any longer in the World. US economy might fail any time, might get divided like the Soviet Union. Better brace for that day than trampling on others like this.

The human rights commission should contact Mr Richard in India and ascertain the truth, whether labour Laws were violated in USA by Khobragade as regards Sangeetha. Labour Laws are very strict in USA and if Khobragades have violated Labour Laws then finding fault with USA Law enforcing agencies is not right.

If Indians are allowed to enter the US and take employees there and pay Indian salaries then I think they will have to allow all Indian/foreign companies who put their offices in the US to pay Indian/their countries Salaries. Today Indians working in Indian software companies have been paid in US dollars as per the US labor laws. But the way the media are projecting that Indians should be able to take employees and pay as per Indian standards is very strange.

Please do not equate the US with some of the Arab countries who allow their employers to pay Indians and other country nationals a meager salary. This cannot happen in Europe or the U.S. The US will never allow anything other than its labor laws. The argument about Indians employed staff being paid not according to US laws does not hold good as they have never violated Indian laws.

We are not peddus like you to think like the way you think. There is no pro US or no pro Indian regarding this or any crime. Justice should be done & guilty should be punished as per the laws of the land. The way your comment here shows how much corrupted person you are.

Peddu, The tough stand taken by Indian HM is really appreciable in support of our Diplomat.

But at the same time, if the servant or diplomat is guilty, then, one should have the humility to accept the reality with grace.
