Colombian held for plotting to kill Venezuelan president

Bogota, Dec 21 (IANS): A Colombian has been arrested for a murder attempt on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, police said.

"Convincing evidence made it possible to look into several accused crimes (conspiracy to commit crime, illegal possession of weapons)," Xinhua quoted a police statement as saying Friday.

It added that the Colombian police shared and verified information with police of other nations that also want the suspect "for crimes of high complexity".

Alejandro Caicedo, 21, has a criminal record that includes drug trafficking activities, murder and conspiracy, and he also has "situations to clarify before different judges in Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Colombia", the statement said.

Caicedo and two other suspects came to Venezuela in August to commit criminal acts such as robbery and murder-for-hire, reported Latin American Herald Tribune.

The two other suspects identified as Victor Gueche, 18, and Erik Huertas, 22, were caught Aug 15 in Venezuela and were charged with murder attempt on Maduro.
