Mangalore May 1: Nuptial ceremonies are getting simpler by the day. A young dalit couple, being denied permission to marry at the police guest house, entered in to wedlock beside the Mahatma Gandhi statue in front of the Town Hall here on Sunday April 30.

The grievance redressal meet of dalits is held at the end of every month at the police guest house here. During the meet on April 30, Dalit representatives Gopal Kadumath and Appi sought permission from the ASP Lokesh Kumar to conduct the wedding by exchanging garlands at the end of the meeting. However, the ASP refused and said that it was not desireable to conduct a wedding a police station premises, especially at a meeting meant for hearing grievances. He also said that if they had any threat to conduct the wedding, the police will provide security.

Eventually, the bride Sujaya and bridegroom Hariprasad, both from Mulki, got married in the presence of the statue of the Mahatma.
