Bengal AAP to conduct membership drive

Kolkata, Dec 28 (IANS): Eager to spread its wings in the state, the West Bengal unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will launch a membership drive here besides celebrating the party taking up the reins in Delhi.

The AAP will be organising the membership drive in the city's Esplanade area. The party expects to boost its membership - now in a nascent stage in the state - by at least a couple of thousand.

"People from across the state have shown interest in joining the party. So, we have decided to organise this drive to formally induct people in the party," said AAP worker Mukul Keshari.

Reaching out to people through social networking sites and SMSes, volunteers have been urging people to "join the political revolution for a better India".

Volunteers have been approaching the young generation, seeking their support for enhancing the AAP's presence in the state.

The AAP held its maiden rally in the city Dec 15, raising its voice against corruption and demanding a strong Lokpal bill.

Party supporters will Saturday evening celebrate Arvind Kejriwal becoming the chief minister of Delhi.

Besides celebrating the historic day, volunteers and members will also take an oath for a corruption-free India.

Kejriwal, 45, took the oath as the Delhi chief minister at a public ceremony at Ramlila Maidan, watched by tens of thousands of excited supporters.

The Bengal unit, at present managed by an ad-hoc committee, is hoping to set up a state committee early next year when its central leadership is expected to tour the city and participate in public rallies with an eye to the general elections.
