Mangalore, May 4: The annual mass marriage ceremony was organised on Wednesday May 3 at Godhooli Lagnam in Dharmasthala here. A total of 125 couples entered into wedlock.
It was the 36th annual mass marriage ceremony at Dharmasthala and so far more than 10,000 people have got married through this programme.
Addressing the media, Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Hegde said that the poor cannot afford to follow the various rituals of marriage. The mass marriages are simple, eliminating the practice of dowry and have proved to be a boon to farmers and the labourers in particular.
He also expressed his gratitude towards the Birla Group of Companies and other benevolent people for their generous donations to the event.
Thousand of people witnessed the programme. The dignitaries and couples came in a procession to Samyak Jnana auditorium. The Dharmadhikari and dignitaries presented the taalis to each of the couples. The couples and their families did not have to spend on anything.
The bridegrooms were given dhotis and shawls while the brides were given sarees, mangal sutras and bangles for the occasion.
