Mangalore, May 5: While the first rains of the summer took many by surprise, the loss and destruction they caused, was however expected. The water flow on the road, failure of electricity and telephone lines, falling of trees damaging public property, is a common feature in and around the city during the rainy season.
This was very much visible on Thursday night during the first rains of the season too. While rains coupled with thunder and lightning were able to cool down the scorching summer night, the heavy showers caused much damage in the city.
A tree that fell on the bus stand at Jyothi, damaged the bus stand entirely. Meanwhile a car and a two-wheeler, an auto rickshaw which were parked just nearby too were damaged heavily. A petty shop which was close to the bus stand too has been damaged.
However, the people who were standing in the bus stand managed to escape from the place before the tree fell on the bus stand. Though there were all chances of electrocution, thanks to power failure, possible danger was averted.
The buses going towards Kankanady and further, were diverted via Milagres and Falnir Road.
However, immediate intervention by the fire brigade and the police with the help of the public, enabled in clearing the road for traffic after some time.
At Bijai, road was damaged owing to heavy rains.
