Kejriwal cuts power tariff, millions to benefit

New Delhi, Dec 31 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday fulfilled his second major election promise and cut power tariff by half to benefit an estimated 28 lakh households.

Kejriwal, who took oath Saturday, also suggested an audit into the power companies in the capital, giving them time until Wednesday morning to file their objections if any.

In the meantime, he said that those consuming up to 400 units -- 0 to 200 units and 201 to 400 units -- of electricity a month would get 50 percent subsidy.

The new power rates will go into effect from Wednesday -- Jan 1.

This would benefit some 28 of the 34 lakh households in Delhi, he added after a cabinet meeting, describing the intended beneficiaries as the poor and the middle class.

Tuesday's decision came a day after he announced that 667 litres of water would be provided free to all households in the capital who have metered connections.

Kejriwal, whose AAP made providing water and drastically cutting power rates its main election promise, also met Comptroller Auditor General (CAG) Shashi Kant Sharma to seek an audit of the power companies.

Kejriwal told the media that his government would wait for the responses from the companies before taking a final decision on audit.

"By tomorrow evening we will decide whether to go for audit or not," he said.

He estimated that the revision in electricity tariff would cost the government Rs.200 crore but Rs.140 crore of this would be borne by the power companies against their outstandings.

There is only one question I have, after reading this article. Has it to do with the incompetence of all Indian governments that problems like infrastructure, water, health care, illiteracy, schooling, social welfare, caste, inequality, poverty and misery of hundreds of millions, have not been solved up to now. India is called the largest democracy on earth. But democracy is only alive when the basic needs of all citizens are met.
India has to go a long way till there will be a shining India and a working democracy. Democracy is for all not only for the upper- and middle class.
The Aam Aadmi Party can change a lot in India and its proposal of 666 litres of free water a day is the right decision. General elections will take place in India this year and the chances for the Aam Aadmi Party are excellent. A victory of the BJP under Mr. Modri would be a catastrophe, but with a strong Aam Aadmi Party the political landscape offers good alternatives in India. All suggestions which have been made and implemented by the Aam Aadmi Party are good and the support for this young party will grow faster than the established political parties can imagine in India.

    The first reaction..Wow..Thats fast..Right
No my dear friends..Nothing is coming free..It is all subsidized, meaning your own tax is being used to pay the bills. What's the point of doing this.Water scheme will not really reach the poor because they don't have water meters and the rich will benefit because they have water meters in their houses. If the same money could have been instead used to lay new water meters and new water pipes then it would have made sense.
Kejriwal used to say that there is lot of corruption in Water board and electricity board and he would remove them. But what he has done only subsidized water and electricity. Tax payers money going to waste instead of going to some good infrastructure projects.

Frankly I have a feeling that giving everything free and at massive discounts will not have any benefits. For me these are just gimmicks.
Rather give basic facilities to one and all at economical prices, control inflation. These policies of AAP will just give Delhi a deficit budget. Money should be spent on education, roads ,infrastructure, sanitation and not on giving freebies.
I would have really appreciated if AAP came out with a policy where the tax payers money would not have been distributed this way.

Subsidies are never going to work in the long run.Look at cooking gas, diesel. How many crores of Rupees is being paid by the government every year to subsidize these.Instead the same money could have been really used in education, healthcare and defense.
This policy will not work in the long term.

Why concession on water and electricity are not initiated or implemented by other ruling parties in other states including Karnataka. AAP proved it’s possible to implement. Benefits shall be applicable to all the citizens as implemented by AAP.

In Karnataka rice is given at the cost of Rs.1/- for poor people and which will be solved to hotels by them. As understand quality of rice is very poor cannot be used other than idly or dosa. If concessions are given on water and electricity, this cannot be solved and benefited by whole family.

I feel that Kejriwal is on the wrong path. Power tariff reduction should come after proper audit of companies to find if they are really overcharging.

Even people with Rs.1lakh per month income will get these subsidies. Is this right?

Where will Kejriwal get resources for laying pipelines to the homes of people who don't get any piped water now? This man will ruin the country. And if all over the country if people support him he'll convert India into Cuba!!

I want AAP to strengthen it's roots in Karnataka soon...What Congress and BJP were doing is charging taxes to public and loot that money. This is proven the honest intention of the AAP and Kesariwal.Already the 2 promises kept. Now he must pay the attentions to 2 major problems of state Delhi...lacks of toilets and woman's security in Delhi.the public.defecations is big problems in Delhi.toilets must be provided with the waters there or toilet papers.it should be maintained cleanliness so the publics use it.usually toilets in public places are not maintained well and it is stained and bad smellings so some peoples dont use it.those who is.not clean and flushing it must be punished. Kesariwal air must lead by example in this matters.also woman's security is important in Delhi.too many rapes is happening and it is affecting the image of the capital.there should be more decent constables patrolling the streets in delhi to scare away the potential rapists.if there is a rape they must be punished and the media should.not hype the issue instead it should be responsible. This will bring the public confidence back in the delhi.jai jo kejriwal sir.
