13 crib deaths in Bengal

Kolkata, Jan 1 (IANS): As many as 13 infants have died in the government-run Malda Medical College Hospital (MMCH) since Monday in West Bengal's Malda district, an official said.

According to hospital superintendent Abdur Rashid, 10 of the babies were newborn and were grossly underweight.

"The rest were referred cases and died due to birth asphyxia," Rashid said Wednesday, adding that an initial report has been mailed to the state health department.

The MMCH has been in the news for regular crib deaths in the past year.
