Be 'careful' while arresting minorities: Shinde tells CMs

New Delhi, Jan 10 (Agencies): Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Friday reiterated Centre's stand against illegal detention of youth of minority communities.

Speaking to scribes, Shinde said, “We are again writing to all chief ministers to ensure that anyone belonging to any minority community, if illegally detained, should be released immediately.”

He again clarified that by minorities, he didn't mean any specific religion, and his statement applied to youths of all minority communities.

On the way forward, he said, “We will appoint committee like the screening/advisory committee for POTA (to enforce it).”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted strongly to Shinde's comments and accused him of pursuing a divisive agenda.

“When talking about an accused or a criminal, where does the question of checking one's religious affiliations arise? It is important to nab a criminal and curb crime, and not to check one's religious certificates. We strongly oppose his stand,” said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.

In the past too, in September last year, the Home Minister had written letters to all Chief Ministers asking them to ensure that no Muslim youth is wrongfully detained or harassed in the name of terror. He had said that the Centre has been receiving various representations on the issue.

Emphasising that the government is committed to its core principle of combating terrorism, Shinde had said authorities should ensure that no innocent person is subjected to undue harassment. "Some of the minority youth have started feeling that they are deliberately targeted and deprived of their basic rights," he wrote.

To arrest criminal, why Police need not check his religion?
Crime should be the only criterion to arrest and accord punishment.
Otherwise, to escape punishment, criminals may change the religion and defame religion!
    Why Govt should consider religions?
    It is ones individual preference.
God created whole universe, but didn't create any religion!
He loved humans so much that he created them in his own image and likeness.
To prepare humanity to face a world in decline, to communicate with us, God sends Prophets.
We can see harmony in the lives of prophets and their messages.
But we humans, instead of following their messages and live harmoniously, created religions, which is o.k. but started fighting with each other, which is surely against the will of God!

Now it is pinching you all. During church attack, police arrived and blackmailed the church committee to handover youth who escaped while police were lathi charging inside the church. Then the church committee handed over youth and the police made them lame. One PSI asked the youth how come you believe a god who were only a under cloth. All this went to dustbin under the so called retired justice somashekar report.
Even now, police arrest people just by phone call by but the same police failed to give justice to Christians who worked selfless for ages.

Shindhe is the Home Minister of India and his party is ruling for last ten years/ most part of last 67 years. If he agrees that only minorities are illegally detained Isn't he indirectly telling the public that his party has failed to ensure protect them?
Or is he acting as BJP's marketing manager? More such statements, more advantage to BJP. Already Pigvijay proved it in his home state MP.

The word "Minority" should be banned from public speeches. The Politicians are using this word thinking that they can earn some votes. This is AAP time not the eara of Congress and BJP.Criminals are Crimanals wheathe they are belong to minority or majority.

Mr. Shinde never made the statement (Be 'careful' while arresting minorities: ) that has been mentioned in the headline. He was referring to illegal detentions, which many organisations have been highlighting in the recent past. Rather sad to see his statement completely twisted for the sake of sensationalism

Mr.TPA,Dont interpret Shinde's statement according to your convenience/mindset.His concern was against illegal detention of youths of minority communities. Is it not wrong to confine the issue of illegal detention only to minority communities? What about others?Should they be detained even though it is illegal?Read and reread the news carefully. Also note from the comments, many from minority community too voiced their concern on Shinde's statement.

Dear Mr KR PRabhu, either you have not read what I have mentioned or are sidestepping it. My point was about the incorrect headline that looks rather deliberate.
You are right when you say his concerns was of illegal
detention of people from minority communities. You are also right when you say many people from minority communities have voiced their concern.

My point is different. The statement that was mentioned in the headline was never actually uttered by the Home Minister at all. Like you said, he spoke about illegal detentions. He never asked the police to "be careful while arresting minorities". The point you make (should he mention all religions) is debatable, and while technically correct, the concern is that many of those whoa re languishing in jails seem to have been deliberately
targetted due to their religion. We could have a constructive debate on this topic, but it is wrong to use a false headline that gives a completely different impression to what was actually said. That is sensationalism, and is best avoided. Thanks

Our Home Minister is repeating, this stupid concern over and over again making the investigating agencies helpless to move on with their investigations. Without arresting the people having suspicion or history of crimes how can they investigate a crime? As it is in our country, most of the seasoned criminals are roaming around freely without any fear repeating the crime ones on bail! This kind of instruction by the HM will only benefit the criminals to continue with their anti-national activities by demoralizing the investigating agencies. Recently, when Bhatkal brothers were suspected as terrorists most of the people took to their side blaming and criticizing the police, but now everybody knows the truth and all are very quiet about it!

It is very correct things shindeji is telling.under congress and rahulji minorities will be safe and sound to pursue their activities without fears of police, CBI or NIA.The arrests by these peoples and the interrogations disrupts their activities. It is fact that minorities is targeted by these agencies. They should be careful while arresting and should give a chance to explain things.Simply arrested then torturings and all this is not legal. It leaves big scars and causes Resentments this is bad for the country.Outside country also we is being targeted this is not nice

The whole headline is sensationalist and misleading. There have been major concerns at the thousands of undertrials languishing in Indian jails, most of these from minority communities. Shinde never ever asked the police to "Be careful while arresting minorities" This twist seems to be deliberate and mischievous. He was merely responding to concerns about the ILLEGAL detention of people, some of whom languish in jails for years altogether under trumped up charges, or worse, as under trails with no recourse to justice
