Two guerrillas killed, Kashmir gunfight continues


Srinagar, J Jan 13 (IANS): Two separatist guerrillas were killed Monday in a gunfight between security forces and guerrillas in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. The exchange of fire was still on at 4 p.m.,, a police officer said.

Security forces surrounded a house in Dooru (Dangerpora) village near Sopore town in Baramulla district, 60 km from here, Monday afternoon. The police action occurred on a tip-off about a group of guerrillas in the area, a senior police officer told IANS.

"When the security forces tightened the cordon around the house, the militants hiding there fired at them, triggering a shoot-out. Two guerrillas hiding inside the house have been killed so far. The exchange of automatic gunfire continues," the officer said.

Tension gripped areas around the village and Sopore town in north Kashmir after news of the gunfight spread.

Senior army, police and paramilitary officers have also reached the site of the gunfight to supervise the operation against the guerrillas.
