16 killed in China fire


Beijing, Jan 14 (IANS): At least 16 people were killed Tuesday in a factory fire in China's Zhejiang province, authorities said.

According to the authorities, the fire broke out in the afternoon in a shoe factory in Wenling city in an area of over 800 sq metres, reported Xinhua.

At least 29 fire engines and nearly 100 firefighters were deployed to put out the fire. More than 20 people were rescued and firemen are still searching for more survivors.

An initial investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
