Gold worth Rs 1.81 crore seized from nine air passengers


Mumbai, Jan 20 (PTI): Customs sleuths detected nine cases of smuggling at the Mumbai international airport here and seized 7.3 kg of gold valued at around Rs 1.81 crore on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, a senior police official said.

In separate cases, nine air passengers, who are all Indians, were intercepted at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport after they landed from different flights arriving from Dubai, Singapore, Sharjah and Bangkok on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. 

Gold in the form of jewellery, rods and bars collectively weighing 7.3 kg was seized, the official said.

Three of the nine accused, who possessed gold worth more than Rs 20 lakh each, were arrested, while the rest were allowed to go.

However, they would be called for questioning as and when required, the officer said.
