Dharamsala, Jan 26 (IANS): The Tibetan administration in exile Sunday greeted India on its 65th Republic Day.

Pema Chhinjor, a senior member in the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) led by Lobsang Sangay, hoisted the Indian national flag at a brief ceremony here.

Sangay, the Tibetan prime minister-in-exile, is currently on a visit to Tibetan settlements in northeast India.

"I feel proud to celebrate the 65th Republic Day of this glorious nation of India. India has achieved independence through non-violent efforts of its leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel," Chhinjor said in his address.

"The non-violent struggle of India has been a great inspiration for freedom and democracy all over the world. The Tibetan people too are highly motivated by India's non-violent resistance to the British rule," he added.

Chhinjor thanked the government and people of India for hosting the Tibetan community for the last more than 50 years.

"We are deeply grateful to the generous hospitality and kindness extended to the Tibetan people and our spiritual leader the Dalai Lama for the last over five decades," he said.

Tibetan home minister Dolma Gyari, senior officials of the CTA and staff of its secretariat attended the ceremony.

The Tibetan administration is based here in Himachal Pradesh and is not recognised by any country. Over 100,000 Tibetans live in India.
