Egypt begins Morsi trial in jailbreak case

Cairo, Jan 28 (IANS): The trial of Egypt's ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 130 others on charges of a 2011 jailbreak kicked off in Cairo Tuesday.

Morsi was flown by helicopter from Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria to the headquarters of the Police Academy in Cairo where the trial is taking place, Xinhua reported citing official news agency MENA.

The hearing is being aired live on state TV.

Morsi stands trial along with 130 other Muslim Brotherhood members and associates of the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Lebanese Shia militant group Hezbollah for storming the Wady al-Natroun prison and kidnapping and killing police officers during the 2011 uprising.
