Man held for acid attack in Agra

Agra, Feb 3 (IANS): A 28-year-old man was arrested here for an acid attack on a girl that she escaped but critically injured her father, police said Monday.

An first information report was registered against Yogesh Pandit Sunday who allegedly threw acid on a girl who managed to escape but badly burnt her father, who had to be hospitalised.

Pandit and his friend were taken into custody. "They were caught by the neighbours who rushed after hearing the cries of the family," said an official.

In a scuffle between the girl's father and Yogesh acid fell on the girl's father, who sustained burn injuries on hand and face.

Pandit was allegedly following the girl for last two years. The family due to fear of getting a bad name did not lodge a complaint.

Neighbours told media that the police initially was reluctant to act, but after a protest by members of a political party, a case was finally registered.

Senior Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur, however said: " Police takes up such matters on priority and keeps the information confidential.
