Farmers to protest Feb 7 on railway tracks

Chandigarh, Feb 3 (IANS): Farmers will organise a protest on rail tracks Feb 7 against "the anti-farmer policies" of the central government, a leader of the BJP's farmers wing said Monday.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kisan Morcha national secretary Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal said the farmers will sit on protest on railway tracks to force the central government to listen to their demands.

Claiming that the anti-farmer policies of the UPA government had forced over 145,000 farmers to commit suicide in the last few years, he said the loan waiver for farmers had not benefitted them and banks were now sending them notices for attachment of land and properties.

"Farmers in Yamuna Nagar district in Haryana have even offered to give their kidney against payment of loans," Grewal alleged.

The farmers are seeking implementation of the M.S. Swaminathan Committee recommendations to give a boost to agriculture sector, providing 50 percent profit to farmers, roll back of fertilizer prices and compensation of Rs.10,000 per acre for risk management, he said.
