Odisha MP discusses migrant workers' wages with Andhra

Bhubaneswar, Feb 4 (IANS): A Lok Sabha member from Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal Tuesday said he has taken up the issue of the state's migrant workers' wages with the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh government.

Baijayant 'Jay' Panda, who represents Kendrapara, said he re-visited Monday the migrant Odia labourers employed in a few brick kilns in Andhra Pradesh to see if any steps were taken to improve their living and working conditions.

Panda, though acknowledged a few initiatives were taken, said the core issue of non-payment of minimum wages was still unaddressed.

Panda had visited Andhra's Ranga Reddy district last year and met some labourers employed there. He had suggested that measures should be taken to safeguard the interest of the workers.

He had also written a letter to the Andhra government and the National Human Rights Commission.
